Frequently Asked Questions about Uninsured Medical Services
What are Uninsured Services?
Uninsured medical services are those that are no longer covered by a provincial health insurance plan.
Examples of Uninsured Services are:
- Prescription Renewal by telephone or fax
- Emailing or faxing reports
- Sick notes or government/insurance forms
Providing these services takes up to 5% of the time and resources required to operate a physician’s practice. When physicians provide these services for patients they are not compensated by the government.
What are the coverage options for Uninsured Services?
Physicians offer an annual fee (sometimes called a “block fee”) program where patients may pay a yearly fee to be covered for all uninsured medical services. If a patient does not wish to pay this, they can opt to for an individual invoice or “pay-as-you-go” program and pay for services as rendered.
What does Individual Invoicing mean?
Individual invoicing gives patients a “pay-as-you-go” option for uninsured medical services. Rather than paying one annual fee to cover all services for one year, patients can choose to only pay for services when they require them.
How do I decide if I should pay the Annual Fee or pay as I go?
We recommend reviewing your physician’s fee list and considering how often you, your significant other, or family, requires any of these services. Costs can pile up quickly and we find that most patients save money by paying the annual fee.
Are there different types of Annual Fee plans to chose from?
Yes, we offer a variety of annual fee programs that suit your family needs. You may choose an annual program for a couple, family, senior (65+), senior couple (65+) or individuals.

Once I sign up am I locked into the program?
If you sign up for an annual fee program, you are covered for that year. You will be given the option to renew the annual fee each year or choose to go to an individual “pay-as-you-go” payment program.
